Enpowerment through Public Spaces

Creating a system that documents, evaluates and provides opportunities to inhabit and enliven public spaces that are otherwise neglected. This process would involve the active participation of the community members; thereby allowing them to take ownership of their space, former stronger ties with their community. If such an idea is replicated in several other communities it will animate the city to become a more hospitable and user friendly environment. We want to propose a specific programs for each of these public spaces, that are initiated and sustained by the citizens themselves. the programs could be a range of possibilities from a cricket match, hawkers symposium, urban reading lounge/ story telling sessions. These programs could also be a reciprocation of the skills and assets of a particular community. With this framework they could use their public spaces to create opportunities of educational, entrepreneurial and collaborative nature.

We're already working on similar initiatives under the auspices of Pulp Urban, an organization that was founded by Javeria Masood and Sundas Shahid. We look forward to collaborating with like minded individuals.

would this be something like a "whats on" page which allows people to see what activities are happening in the city that week? or perhaps could be incorporated into it?

+1 - though at the moment I can't imagine what a 'digital' product of this could look like. It involves more human interaction and is definitely a must have, especially when the current spaces are being eaten up in the name of convenience.
